Sensory Scientist

Salary Range: $85,000-95,000 + 7.5-15% bonus + relocation assistance

SUMMARY
The Sensory Scientist is responsible for leading and conducting value-added, actionable sensory and consumer research to drive business performance

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide technical sensory guidance & leadership to Research and Development, Marketing, Packaging R&D, Quality and Manufacturing. Design and execute appropriate sensory research through the products’ lifecycle. Recommend appropriate next steps based on results
  • Design, execute, analyze & report sensory information, with limited oversight, to deliver optimal products by translating consumer wants and needs into actionable technical recommendations
  • Plan, organize and conduct sensory training activities at all locations including co-packers. Train technical & non-technical audiences
  • Lead group initiatives around future sensory capabilities, help plan and prioritize projects for the group
  • Assist in the management of the on-site trained flavor and texture descriptive analysis panel including panelists’ recruitment, screening, training, panel upkeep and monitoring
  • Serve as internal analytical sensory expert and consult with clients during all stages of a project. Identify/clarify project objectives and business issues
  • Develop, communicate and report metrics corresponding to site calibration and product quality. Utilize sensory tools to improve product standards and identify areas of opportunity
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously in a cross-functional manner. Ensure timelines, budgets and objectives are met. Communicate using project management techniques
  • Develop new, improved and/or more cost effective sensory science research tools, methods and processes. Communicate and train on emerging areas of sensory science, keeping up to date with advances in sensory science through journals, scientific meetings and networking

Education
B.S. Degree in Food Science, Sensory Science, or related field with at least (5) years experience in the food industry or M.S. Degree in Food Science with a focus in Sensory with at least three (3) years experience in the food industry

Skills 

  • Experience in the application of sensory (descriptive and discrimination), consumer research (CLT, HUT, focus groups) and statistics in a consumer product goods company 
  • In-depth knowledge of technical tools that support sensory testing (automated data collection systems and statistical software). Proficiency in statistical analysis required including multivariate analysis, design of experiment and principle component analysis. Experience conducting sensory training
  • Ability to effectively interpret trends/implications of test results across multiple types of sensory research and analytical testing methodologies
