SUMMARY
Directs and coordinates research and development technical activities for organizational products, services, or ideologies by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Establishes current and long range objectives, plans and policies for department

Communicates corporate priority for R&D project mix (new product developments for various sales divisions, productivity, technical foundation building and early technology investigations)

Collaborates with business division leadership to set direction to meet customer and consumer needs

Support the culture of innovation across the department

Creates and delivers technical budgets
-
Allocates human resources and keeps their skills current with the needs of the organization and stakeholders

Supports the developmental of Intellectual Property processes and the execution of contracts, agreements and patent development

Develops and implements methods and procedures for improving department effectiveness and monitoring department activities

Reviews operating results of the organization, compares them to established objectives, and takes steps to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to correct unsatisfactory results

Establishes and maintains an effective system of communications throughout the department

Analyzes new technologies and runs competitive analyses
-
Provides external customer service to sales and marketing teams by customer site visits, problem solving, consultation and presentation, as needed

Negotiates contracts with consulting firms to perform department services.

Provides technical knowledge to Executive management with respect to Food/Dairy Science principles and product development techniques and processes

Represents organization with external stakeholders
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises 4 to 7 employees in the Research and Development Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Education Required: Master's degree (M.S.) or equivalent;
Experience Required: Six to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
